Bobotie

A Traditional South African dish made with meat, curry spices and topped with a layer of egg and milk.

The first recipe for bobotie appeared in a dutch cookbook more than 400 years ago, it found it way to South Africa with the original settlers and was adopted by the Cape Malay community. Nearly every family have their version of this delicious dish....and this is ours.

Recipe

  • 1 Kg Lean beef mince.

  • 2 Large Onions finely chopped

  • 2 Large slices Bread White or Brown

  • 375ml Milk

  • 3 Large Eggs

  • 3 Tbsp Curry Powder / Paste - more if you like it hotter

  • 1 tsp Sugar

  • 1 Lemon - juice and grated rind

  • 1 Tbsp Oil

  • 2 Tbsp Chutney (preferably Mrs Balls)

  • 2 Tbsp Tomato paste

  • 1 tsp Ginger powder

  • 1/2 tsp Cumin powder

  • 1/2 tsp Coriander

  • 250 ml seedless Raisins

  • 4 Bay Leaves

  • 2 Tbsp Butter

  • Salt & Pepper to taste

  • Toasted Almonds to decorate

Fry the onions in oil untill golden. Soak Bread in haf the Milk and mix in one Egg.

Mix all the other dry ingredients with lemon Juice, Tomato Paste and Chutney.

Mix the raw mince in a large bowl with the cooked onions + Bread / Milk mixture as well as the dry ingedients mixture, Add  Raisons and Lemon Rind and mix well.

Spread in mixture in a well buttered  oven-proof dish.

Beat the remaining 2 Eggs with milk and season with salt and pepper. Pour over meat mixture, and sprinkle on Almonds and Bay leaves

Bake in oven at 180C / 350F for 40-50 mins or untill top golden.

Serve with yellow rice and / or salad and lashings of Mrs Balls Chutney.
